October Surprise: 6 Tips for Handling Unexpected Changes

Yes, of course, I know it’s August, but I was so taken by the phrase “October Surprise” it led to a coaching moment. An “October Surprise” is political lingo for a game-changing event that can irreparably damage one candidate’s chances and advance the others. Whether it’s something calculated or something unplanned it can seriously change movement of an election. Who knew?!!?

I have had my share of life’s October Surprises, and I’m sure you have too. Those events that make your head spin and alter your plans or sometimes change the course of your life. Muddling through a season of change can challenge even the most resilient person. In times of political and/or personal chaos, you can draw strength from your faith and your community in the following ways.

1.      Trust’s God’s Sovereignty: Gods got this! Even when the world seems out of control, God is always in control. Trust the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take (Proverbs 3:5-6, NLT).

2.      Pray: Use prayer to find peace and guidance. Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and mind as you live in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7, NLT).

3.      Stay informed but stay grounded: Stay informed about what’s happening but ground yourself in the Word so that you are not overwhelmed by the news. Psalm 46:1, reminds us that God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

4.      Be kind: Everyone is going through something. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference for you and those you show kindness.

5.      Community support: Lean on your tribe of friends and loved ones as well as your church community for support and encouragement.

6.      Self-care: Prioritize your physical and mental health. Exercise, proper nutrition and rest can alleviate stress. If you don’t have a counselor or therapist, talk to a trust confidant if you feel the need. Engage in activities that refresh you and bring you joy. Creativity and recreation can be quite therapeutic.

Remember no matter how you feel, your emotions are valid. It’s ok to feel them all during times of change and challenge. Lean into your faith, your family, and your friends for comfort and encouragement. Know that it’s just a season. God’s is in control, and this too shall pass.

Peace.
